----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Queen on Fire February 2007------------
The much anticipated Queen on Fire ‘rocked’ The Paget Rooms on Saturday 17th February to raptuous audience of over 300.
Despite having to reschedule at the eleventh hour due to the adverse weather condtions last week….the show did go on !!!
But it still wasn’t plain sailing……..Although the crew arrived without incident to set up, the band themselves, travelling in a brand new hire car, broke down in Ross on Wye.
“ Like the snow last week…my reaction was……this is unbelievable! I was starting to think that the show was jinxed. Luckily, we had the resources available to pick them up from the services in our tour truck so they made it in time to sound check…PHEW !” said Nikki Pateman-Chang who organised the concert in association with CMC Promotions.
The show was opened by Andy Coleman ( vocals) and Alan Rogers (guitar) who did a fabulous job performing a mix of well-known songs and originals to an enthusiastic audience who were full of anticipation of what was to come. And they weren’t to be disappointed.
From the moment that Queen on Fire burst onto stage with ‘Tie your mother down’ they immediately had the crowd rocking until the final encore of ‘ We are the champions’.
Scott Maley, as Freddie Mercury, gave a blistering performance winding the crowd up, song by song, with a dynamic and visual 90 minute set packed with excellent classics from one of Britain’s most successful bands.
“ We are all huge Queen fans who have taken on a role and work hard at it.” Scott confessed that it had taken hours of watching Freddie on videos to emulate him to a tee. But he adds most of the mannerisms on stage come naturally and I’m blessed with looking like him.
“Simon ( Brian May ) Lilley’s playing was superb…the sound and style were so authentic” said Alan Jones of CMC Promotions.
“The whole audience were singing along and what stays with me is the atmosphere and camaraderie of the whole night. It was quite an emotional experience to see the old Paget Rooms ‘buzzing’ full of people of all ages having great fun….and I’m sure the building loved it !” said Nikki.
Even Scott remarked that The Paget Rooms was a great venue to play .
“ After playing to 10,000 in Spain it was wonderful to play to such a fantastic audience in an intimate theatre where the balconies surround you and allow you to connect with the crowd. “
Audience member, Vanessa Parselle said “ This is what The Paget Rooms should be used for…Penarth needs more shows like this”
Full praise must go to the Paget Rooms staff, especially duty officer on the night, Les O’Brien, who was a great help in the smooth running of the show.
